The best cell phones of 2013

The best cell phones of 2013

Let's face it, 2012 was not a bad year for smartphones. We have seen amazing smartphones flooding the market, smartphones like iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X. All the current signs point out that the next year will be even better. Cell phone manufacturers are already preparing those devices that we like so much: the best cell phones of 2013.

The list with the most anticipated phones of 2013 must start with Samsung, because they had such a good year in 2012. They raised the stakes of the game with their Galaxy S3, an amazing device, a top smartphone at a reasonable price (compared to the iPhone's price). The question everyone wants to know the answer to is "When will the Samsung Galaxy S4 be released?". Well, the answer to that is probably first trimester of 2013. Rumors state that it will feature a quad-core chip, a 5'' display and a 13 megapixel camera. That's good enough for me. S4 is expected to be released in April or May 2013.

The main competitor of Samsung is without a doubt Apple's iPhone 5. With this cell phone, Apple acknowledged that the consumer is not satisfied with a small display, and everyone wants a bigger phone. With all these in mind, they didn't forget that a phone is not a tablet, and you still need to be able to use it with just one hand. So, starting from this idea, they have created the iPhone 5, probably the best smartphone of 2012. It's lightweight, it's really fast and it looks like a piece of jewelry in everyone's hand. But, as always, Apple's fans need more. In 2013, Apple will release the next generation of iPhone. We don't know if the next iPhone will be called iPhone 5S or iPhone 6, but we can speculate about its features: finger print scanning technology, a 12 megapixel camera, a slicker design and even more power. In the mean time, Apple already announced the iOS 7 as the next installment of their operating system for mobiles and tablets. According to SciNotions, there are at least 10 cool features that make it better than iOS 6, so we can expect further great things from Apple. The iOS 7 will be released in the last quarter of the year. Also, in 2013, Samsung will release the first flexible smartphone ever. That's something worth waiting for... right?

Microsoft is known around the World for its operating system and programs and for their video gaming success with the XBox and Xbox 360. They are struggling for some time to enter the smartphone market, and 2013 could be their year. It seems that Microsoft is preparing the Microsoft Surface Phone. We have only shy rumors about this project, but the prospect of a phone that could have some of the features of Surface tablet is really interesting and cool.

Mark Zuckerberg learned a valuable lesson from the first big social network: MySpace. He now knows that in order to remain relevant, he needs to penetrate every segment of the market, smartphone market included. That's why, in 2013, Facebook will release its own smartphone, the HTC Opera UL, the official Facebook phone. I'm not sure if how the market will react to this project, but the features (1.4Ghz chip, 1280x720 display, Android OS) looks promising.

Of course, I'm still waiting for a smartphone that will allow me to record music at high standards, maybe one that will actually have support for a condenser microphone or audio interfaces. But maybe I'm thinking to far ahead of my time.
